Good thing I scan my spam file as part of my email processing. Otherwise, I would have missed this excellent newsletter. I had actually seen a forward from it on a library listserv earlier in the day, but it wasn't until evening that I saw the original post as I dug through the day's messages.

If you're a librarian or a book lover, then please read. If you're a librarian and a scold, then please don't mark emails from I Love Libraries as spam. When you do that, you tell spam filter robots to mark important messages as trash, and the robots apply the spam label in millions of other librarians' mailboxes. Shame on you, lazy person. If you don't want to receive messages from a sender, then use the unsubscribe function. There ought to be a law against marking messages as spam unless they have a criminal intent.

The Life Cycle of a Snail by L. L. Owens (2012), ISBN 9781609731915

Booklist Review...
In this title, part of the Life Cycles series, Owens accurately points out that every living thing has a life cycle. And the life cycle of a snail is divided as follows: egg, hatchling, and adult. With big, clear full-page photos (one per spread) as well as straightforward text, readers can follow along on the slimy journey from egg to snail. The design here is spare, and potentially unfamiliar words-radula, hibernate-are highlighted and defined in a glossary. One feature of the book is particularly child-friendly: each photo illustrates a line or two of text ("Water snails live in either freshwater or saltwater"), which is superimposed on the image, and coordinates nicely with the main text. The final spread offers up a life- cycle diagram, particularly helpful for visual learners. While the headings in the book don't divide as naturally as they might, this title offers up beautiful photos and a text simple enough for young gastropod lovers.

This young Darth Vader winning the annual Super Bowl “ad war” is more proof of the incredible appeal of the Star Wars franchise.

Some things to think about this Star Wars ad:

1. Boys & Star Wars.
This is clearly a boy in the Darth Vader suit – and getting boys like him interested in books and reading is one of the main goals of schools today. The gap between boys and girls’ reading scores is a major concern. We have the books all boys will want to read.

2. Star Wars should be in preschools or kindergarten settings – all the way through middle/junior high/high school

From the industry site “TV by the Numbers,” Jan 2010:

“The animated action-adventure block (Clone Wars) earned 29% delivery gains among kids 9-14 (468,000) and 27%ratings gains (1.9). Across the block, boys 9-14 delivery (391,000) surged by 44% and ratings (3.1) by 41%, while boys 6-11 delivery (464,000) grew by 4% and ratings (3.7) by 6%.”

In other words – 844,000 boys ages 6-14 watch the Clone Wars every week on TV. That’s the number 1 show on Friday nights for boys in the US.
